Who are you? Ponder that for a moment…
My Pastor at Flatirons, Jim Burgen, taught a powerhouse of a message today that lit a fire inside me and birthed a message that echoes throughout our spirit’s groanings for identity, for beauty, for Truth. In fact, as soon as the video of the service is available from their website I will add the link below. But this message could not wait. So here goes…
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. All things came to be through Him, and without Him nothing made had being. In Him was life and the life was the Light of mankind. The Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not suppressed it.” John 1: 1-5
Jesus is indeed the Word of God. & In the beginning, All things came to be through Him.
When we were formed in that Garden so long ago, God said, “It is good.”
“Then God said, “Let us make humankind in our image, in the likeness of ourselves; and let them rule over the fish in the sea, the birds in the air, the animals, and over all the earth, and over every crawling creature that crawls on the earth.” So God created humankind in his own image; in the image of God he created him: male and female he created them…God saw everything that he had made, and indeed it was very good. So there was evening, and there was morning, a sixth day.” Genesis 1:26-27, 31.
Yes! He created us in His own image and likeness and it was very good. In Him, we were naked and unashamed!
“They were both naked, the man and his wife, and they were not ashamed.” Genesis 2:25
But when did we begin to see ourselves differently then in His image and likeness? When sin entered the heart of man, the light dimmed and the darkness inside of us grew. Our vision was skewed and distorted and we saw ourselves…differently.
“They heard the voice of ADONAI, God, walking in the garden at the time of the evening breeze, so the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of ADONAI, God, among the trees in the garden. ADONAI, God, called to the man, “Where are you?” He answered, “I heard your voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked, so I hid myself.” He said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree from which I ordered you not to eat?” Genesis 3:8-11
Who told us that we were naked? Fear entered our hearts and shame overtook us. We hid from the presence of God, who is the Light and the Word, through which allows us to see clearly.
We can’t see in the dark. We need Light. In the dark, we can’t see ourselves properly in His image and likeness. Now that sin has entered the scene, our sight is distorted and our perception and understanding is in need of restoration.
Jesus changes everything, restores us, and makes ALL things new so that once again, in Jesus, God can look at us and say, “It is very good.”
“The Word became a human being and lived with us, and we saw his Sh’khinah, the Sh’khinah of the Father’s only Son, full of grace and truth….No one has ever seen God; but the only and unique Son, who is identical with God and is at the Father’s side — he has made him known.” John 1:14,18.
“He is the visible image of the invisible God. He is supreme over all creation,” Colossians 1:15
“For whoever hears the Word but doesn’t do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror, who looks at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like.” James 1:23-24.
Jesus, who is the Word wrapped in flesh, is the physical representation of God and when we look at Him, it is like looking the mirror. If we hear what He says and obeys then we are like someone who has looked in a mirror and remembers what He looks like.
The Word, which created all things, came to dwell with us so that He could shine a light into the darkness, allowing us to see clearly, and restore the mirror in which we see ourselves.
Through Him, our perception and understanding of who He is, is fully restored. Thus, through His power and restoration of our perception and understanding of who He is, who we see and how we see in the mirror is RESTORED.
Because of Jesus, we now know WHO we are by understanding WHOSE we are.
Jesus restored the image bearers of Christ. He restored the image & likeness bearers of God so that we can be UNASHAMED, UNAFRAID; NO LONGER HIDING FROM GOD.
The sin that stains and distorts what we see and how we see is taken away!
“The next day, Yochanan saw Yeshua coming toward him and said, “Look! God’s lamb! The one who is taking away the sin of the world!” John 1:29
Once we were lost and now, in Christ, we are found.
With all my heart, I say to you and myself, “Stop looking at the world for your identity and value. Stop looking to your sin and shame for your image and likeness!”
You were created in His image & likeness and in Christ you are reborn and made new; your sight fully restored so that you can see clearly in the mirror; God’s Word who is Light, Love, Grace, Truth and Sovereignty bears witness to the Truth. His Authority and Artistry created you wonderfully and fearfully.
If you are hungry and thirsty for identity….Come. To. Jesus. & Drink.
Taste and see that the Lord is good.
